Chapter 1 - The Letter

"Congratulation," the letter said. "You have been accepted to Camp Clover for Boys, a unique and educational experience you will enjoy over two weeks this summer."

15-year-old Timmy Taylor read and re-read the first line. He didn't know anything about a summer camp. His parents hadn't said anything about him going there. He thought he was going to spend part of the summer with his Grandparents on their farm like he had all of his young life while his parents went on their annual summer retreat.

The letter gave the camp dates, which would begin shortly after his sixteenth birthday, and had a list of things he would need. There was also a second letter that said that he had been scheduled for a thorough physical examination and gave the date, time and address of a doctor he was supposed to see.

The letters gave Timmy a lot to wonder about. Why had he been chosen to go to this camp? Why hadn't his parents said anything about this? Why a special doctor's appointment? And the camp list was strange. He'd been camping with his Scout troop before, but this list said he had to bring dress clothes, too.

Timmy had just arrived home after school when he found the letter in the mail. Timmy's Mom and Dad were at work, and he wasn't supposed to call them unless it was an emergency. His older sister Anne wasn't home, either, so he couldn't ask her about it. In the mean time, Timmy had to get over to the "Y" for swimming practice, so his questions would just have to wait.

Timmy rode his bike to the YMCA, which was just a couple of blocks from where his family lived. When he got there, his best friend Tom was waiting for him at the door.

"Running a little late, aren't we?" asked Tom. "What kept you?"

"I got a letter in the mail and I took a couple of minutes to read it," replied Timmy.
